Eldest son of Ryosuke Arai, a retainer of the Lord of Taira (Fukushima Prefecture), he studied the Confucian philosophy at Shoheiko, the Shogunate college in Edo, and at the same time studied medicine. Later he became a disciple of Priest Keisan-Eizen of the Sato Sect.
He developed a doctrine connecting Buddhism with Western science. In 1881, he was appointed an instructor at the Indian philosophy section, Tokyo University upon its establishment. He became a chief priest of the Saijoji Temple in Odawara (Kanagawa Prefecture) in 1882 and a member of the Imperial Academy in 1885 and Superintendent Priest of the College of Soto Sect in 1892.
