Tarozaemon Sawa studied Western naval science in Nagasaki as one of the naval cadets picked by the Shogunate (1857).
Tarozaemon Sawa contributed much to the building of a Western-style navy of the Shogunate as a gunner and naval strategist. In the war of Meiji Restoration (1868), he resisted Imperial forces at Hakodate, Hokkaido. After the restoration, he was appointed instructor and deputy director of the naval academy of the Imperial Government.
