Velikanova, Tatiana was born on February 3, 1932 in Moscow.


Graduated from Moscow University in mathematics and physics, 1954.


Elder daughter of M. A. Velikanov (1879-1964). Taught mathematics and physics at schools in Sverdlovsk Oblast’. Married the scientist К.

I. Babitskii. Returned to Moscow, 1956. Researcher at a scientific institute. Became involved in the human rights movement after her husband’s arrest during a demonstration against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, 1968.

Member of the Initiative Group for the Defence of Human Rights from May 1969. Took part in the distribution of the samizdat Khronika Tekushchikh Sobytii. Arrested, November 1979.

Detained at Lefortovo prison, Moscow. Sentenced, August 1980, to 4 years in the camps, and 5 years in exile. Her case received international publicity.
