Kostic was born on March 7, 1962 in Maribor, Slovenia; the daughter of Stanimir and Judita (Strazisar) Kostic.

Kostic received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Novi Sad in 1990. Four years later she earned her Master of Science in Neurosciences at the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies at the University of Belgrade. Also in 1997, Tatjana was given a Ph.D. from the University of Novi Sad.
Kostic began her career as a research assistant of the Department of Biology and Ecology at the University of Novi Sad in 1991. Seven years later she was appointed an assistant professor at the same university and had held the position for two years.
Also in 1999, Tatjana became a visiting fellow at Section on Cellular Signaling at Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. In 2003, she took a position of an associate professor at the University of Novi Sad. Since 2008 Kostic has been a professor at that university.
Kostic is a member of Serbian Biochemical Society, International Association for Ecology, Womens in Endocrinology, Serbian Molecular Biology Society and Federation of the European Biochemical Societies.
