Tatto Shiba was born in around 530.
He came to Japan around 522 in the reign of Emperor Keitai. He built a hermitage at Sakatahara (Nara Prefecture) and kept a Buddhist statue. People called him "Chinese God." The Emperor granted him the title of Kuratsukuri-no-Suguri (Suguri means head of the village).
During the reign of Emperor Bitatsu, he collaborated with Umako Soga in spreading Buddhism. His daughter, Shima, became a nun and was called Zenshin-ni. Kura-tsukuri-no-Tori (Toribusshi), a sculptor of Buddhist statues, was his grandson.
