Tawfiq Yusuf Awwad was born on November 28, 1911 in Bharsaf, a village in Matn District, the second of seven children. As a child he experienced the famine in Mount Lebanon at the end of World War I.

Tawfiq was educated in Bikfayya before attending Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon from 1923 to 1927.
Tawfiq was a writer and diplomat. Awwad worked as a journalist, worked as an editorial secretary of the nationalist Damascus-based newspaper Al-Qabas from 1931 till 1946. He also served at Lebanese Government from 1946 in a wide range of postings, retiring in 1975 as Lebanese Ambassador to Italy.
