Çimen received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2000. Three years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering from the same university.
Çimen began his career as a research assistant and teaching assistant at the University of Sheffield in 2000. Three years later he took a position of a postdoctorate research associate in nonlinear systems and control at the same university and held it for a year. Then in 2005, Tayfun became a systems engineer at Turkish Navy Research Center Command. The same year he held the position of a design engineer at Roketsan Missiles Industries Inc, where he worked until 2016.
He also worked as a part-time lecturer at Gazi University from 2007 to 2008. Since 2016 Çimen has been a flight control systems engineer at Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. Also since 2018 he has served as a group advisor at the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
Çimen is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
On October 13, 2004 Tayfun Çimen married Dawn Marie Calleja.
