Her parents were Hava (Cohen) and Rabbi Haim Hirshenson. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from Hunter College and an Master of Arts degree in literature from Columbia University. Thus Tehilla became the first Jewish American woman to serve as the spiritual leader of an ongoing Jewish congregation.
