During this time, he was selected in the Hurricanes schools side alongside future team-mate Jackson Hemopo. His appearances were fleeting during that campaign and he made only 1 start, however in 2014 he established himself as a regular with 9 starts and 2 tries in what was a disappointing season overall for Otago. International Walden represented New Zealand Under-20 during the 2013 Institutional Review Board Junior World Championship in France.

Despite this, his performances saw him named as a member of the Highlanders wider training group for the 2015 Super Rugby season.
