In 1619, Katsushige Itakura, Shogunate gov¬ernor of Kyoto, by order of Shogun Hide- tada Tokugawa, arrested 63 Christians in and around Kyoto. Fifty-three of them were burned alive. Among them were Tahei and his wife, who, after having seen their five children die in flames, calm¬ly met death.
