Hanazono Tenno ascended the Throne in 1308. Well-versed in Confucian and Buddhist literature, he attempted to restore the Imperial government. He could not attain his end, however, because ex-Em- perors Fushimi and Gofushimi wielded actual power. He abdicated in 1318 after a reign of nine years and entered priesthood. A poet, he left a selection of his waka called Fuga-shu. He converted the Hanazono detached palace into the Myoshinji Temple (in Kyoto) by way of expressing his Zen faith.
