The references to the kingdom of “Tsan” (Chinese reading) or “Ya” in the official Chinese histories of the Sung and Liang dynasties are believed to refer to his reign. This period saw the power of the Yamato court grow rapidly and reach its peak is graphically witnessed by the huge burial mound in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, which is generally known as the Tumulus of the Emperor Nintoku.
The largest royal tumulus in the world, it has an overall length of 477 meters. The width of the square front section is 305 meters and its height 27 meters, while the round rear section is 245 meters in diameter and 30 meters in height, with three moats encircling the whole. It is an eloquent symbol of the new power of the state and authority of the monarch in the fifth century.
