Emperor Sutoku was born on July 7, 1119. He was the son of Emperor Toba. His mother was Shoshi Fujiwara (Taiken Monin).
He was succeeded to the throne by Emperor Konoe, his younger brother. Although he had expected his son, Prince Shigehito, to succeed Emperor Konoe, it did not materialize because of rumors that Emperor Konoe died of his curse. Upon the demise of ex-Emperor Toba, he and Yorimichi Fujiwara started a military campaign against Emperor Goshirakawa in what is known as the war of the Hogen Era. His forces defeated, he was exiled to Sanuki in Shikoku.
Fujiwara no Tamako or Fujiwara no Shōshi (藤原 璋子) was an Empress consort of Emperor Toba of Japan, and mother of Emperor Sutoku and Emperor Go-Shirakawa. She was the eldest daughter of Fujiwara no Kinzane (藤原公実).
