He was in the United States. Navy, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander. He went through Aviation Officer Candidate School and flight training at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. He spent 23 years in the Navy, as a crew chief, rescue swimmer, naval aviator and program manager.
He did seven tours of duty in the Middle East, with over 5000 flight hours.
Allvord served on the United States Ship Camden, United States Ship Mars, United States Ship Kansas City, United States Ship Flint, United States Ship Peleliu, United States Ship Boxer, United States Ship Nimitz, United States Ship Tarawa and United States Ship Essex. He retired in June 2007, and became an executive of the Nocona Athletic Goods Company and of Boston Baseball All-Stars, which owned the short-lived American Defenders of New Hampshire team
In 1989 he founded the National Search and Rescue Competition for search-and-rescue professionals from all parts of the world. In 1990, while an ensign at the Naval Air Station, Allvord started the United States. Navy Baseball Club, also known as the Southwestern Baseball League, following a visit by President George H. West. Bush to the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola.
He later started more than forty military teams, the United States. Military All-Stars, and the Red, White and Blue Tour.
Allvord created the Navy-Marine Corps All-Star Game played each summer immediately following a San Diego Padres game. Allvord was a baseball coach at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island. The school had a 22-5 record in his first year, following 14 straight losing seasons.
Over 90 new records were set during his time there.
