He averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in his National Basketball Association career and earned National Basketball Association All-Rookie Team honors in 1979. He also participated in the 1986 National Basketball Association Slam Dunk Contest, where he finished in last place (8th). In 2001, he was inducted into the Detroit Mercy Titans Hall of Fame.
A 6"7" forward/guard from Northwestern High School and the University of Detroit (now known as the University of Detroit Mercy), Tyler played 11 seasons (1978–1989) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, and Dallas Mavericks.
