Tetsu Hattori was born in Japan.
He explored the seven islands of Izu, located south of Tokyo, and wrote books on the botany of those islands. He later explored Sumatra Island in the Netherlands East Indies and collected botanical specimens there. Returning to Japan, he became a staff writer of the Toa Bdeki Shimbun, a trade newspaper published in Pusan, Korea. As a reporter of the Osaka Nippo, he started on a tour of exploration of the South Seas (1908).
