Tetsujo Ugai was born in 1814 in Japan. He was the son of Masayoshi Ugsi, a retainer of Arima Clan (Fukuoka Prefecture).

Tetsujo Ugai was born in 1814 in Japan. He was the son of Masayoshi Ugsi, a retainer of Arima Clan (Fukuoka Prefecture).
Tetsujo Ugai became a priest at the age of 6 and later studied Confucianism and Buddhism at Kyoto (1827).
After completing his study of esoteric Buddhism of Jado Sect at Zjaji Temple was appointed chief of Denzu in Temple in Edo and of Chion-in Temple in Kyoto. Died in Owari while on a religious mission.
Excelled in poetry, music, painting and calligraphy and made intensive research in ancient manuscripts of various classics. Wrote and published several books, and made extensive lecture tours.
