Background
Tetsuo Kitahara was born in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture. He was an younger brother of Hakushu Kitahara, famous poet.

Tetsuo Kitahara studied in the Economic Department of Keio University, Tokyo, but left it in 1915 before graduation.
Career
Tetsuo Kitahara formed Oranda Bookstore Company which name was later changed to the ARS Company. He published various books of literature and fine arts, and also the monthly photographic magazine Camera (1921). Many other books for photography were published by his company to contribute to the development of photographic arts.
