He was educated in Architecture and Engineering at the University of Delft (Netherlands).
At the age of twenty-three migrated to the United States. In 1887, while in search for work as architectural draftsman in New York, he secured a position with the firm of McKim, Mead & White. A few years later he was taken into partnership, and when William Mead died in 1928, van der Bent succeeded to the latter's position as head of the Office of Business Management, where he remained in charge the rest of his life.
As designer, Mr. van der Bent was identified with a number of the firm's important buildings, including the Hotel Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Terminal Station, several buildings at Columbia University, additions to the Metropolitan Museum, and the old Madison Square Gardens, all in New York, also the Medical School building at Cornell University.
In 1915, Mr. Van der Bent was elected to the New York Chapter, A.I.A., and remained a member until his decease.
