Assistant attorney general 2d Circuit of Tennessee, 1911-1913. Judge Criminal and Law Court, 1913-1918. Judge Circuit Court, 19th Circuit of Tennessee, 1918-1923.

United States district judge, East and Middle districts of Tennessee, 1923-1928. United States circuit judge, Sixth Circuit, since June 12, 1928, Presiding judge since 1938, chief judge since 1948.
