Thaddeus Merriman, American civil engineer.


Merriman, Thaddeus was born on April 6, 1876 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Son of Mansfield and Wanda (Kubale) Merriman.


C.E., Lehigh University, 1897. Honorary Doctor Engineering, same university, 1930.


Began as assistant engineer New Britain (Connecticut) Water Works, 1897. On surveys United States Nicaragua Canal Commission, 1897-1899. Chief of survey party, United States Isthmian Canal Commission, 1899-1900.

With New York Continental Jewell Filtration Company on design Little Falls, New Jersey, water filtration plant, 1900-1901. Inspector in the United States for Guayaquil & Quito Railway Company, 1901-1902. With Jersey City Water Supply Company as assistant engineer construction Boonton Dam, later div. engineer E. Jersey, Passaic & Acquackanonk Water companies, 1902-1905.

With Board of Water Supply City of New York, surveys, plans, designs and construction Catskill Water Supply System, from 1905, successively assistant engineer, assistant to chief engineer, department engineer, deputy chief engineer, and, June 1922-November 1933, chief engineer same, continuing with plans for new project for supply from Delaware River, this plan was approved by Supreme Court of the United States Court in 1913. In private practice as construction engineering, 1933-1936. Now construction engineering Board of Water Supply on construction Delaware River Aqueduct for New York City.

Lecturer on hydraulics and water supply, Lehigh University Consulting engineer to War Department on Fort Peck project in Montana and on flood control project in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, California. Construction engineering to Tennessee Valley Authority. Editor in chief American Civil Engineers Handbook.
