Thaddeus Rich, musical director, violinist. Decorated with Order of the Crown by King Ferdinand of Rumania, 1922. member Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Arthur Nikisch, 1901-1902.


Rich, Thaddeus was born on March 21, 1885 in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Son of William Shipman and Susan Blanche (Slager) Rich.


Studied violin under Richard Schliewen and Hugh McGibney (United States). Pupil of Arno Hilf, violin, Wendling and Von Bose, piano, Quasdorf and Jadassohn, composition, Reinicke and Hermann, ensemble, Leipzig Conservatory of Music, 1897-1902. Member Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Arthur Nikisch, 1901-1902.

Student Royal Hochschule der Musik, Berlin, under Josef Joachim, 1902-1903. Doctor of Music, Temple University, 1913.


Blanchard William Means), Thaddeus. Concert-master Berlin-Charlottenburg opera, 1903-1904. Tour of Germany and Austria, 1904-1905.

Returned to the United States and appeared on tour, 1905-1906. Concert master and associate conductor Philadelphia Orchestra, 1906-1926. Dean College of Music, Temple University since 1913.

Founded Rich Quartette, 1908. Conducted Philadelphia Festival Orchestra, 1915-1926. Associate with Leopold Stokowski at Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia), 1925-1926.

Associate with Nikolai Sokoloff as assistant director of Federal Music Project since 1935. Owner of collection of rare stringed instruments.
