Jeff Jimerson is an American singer from Pittsburgh known for performing the national anthem at Pittsburgh Penguins games for more than three decades. He is also the lead vocalist of Airborne, has performed with the B. E. Taylor Christmas Show, contributed to recorded music, and appeared as an anthem singer in the film Sudden Death.
Background
Jimerson was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1955 and developed his career within the city's longstanding live-music and professional-sports culture. Pittsburgh's major sports venues provided a prominent public setting for singers performing ceremonial music, while the region's club and event circuit supported working musicians and touring bands.
Career
Jimerson became the Pittsburgh Penguins' national anthem singer in the early 1990s and has remained closely associated with the club's home games. The Penguins, founded in 1967, are Pittsburgh's National Hockey League franchise, and their pregame anthem tradition has made Jimerson's voice familiar to generations of spectators. He has also performed the national anthems for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. His Penguins work has included appearances during the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008, 2009, 2016, and 2017, and he led the crowd in singing “O Canada” before a Penguins-Flyers game in Pittsburgh in October 2014 as a tribute to victims of the Ottawa shootings.
Since 1990, Jimerson has performed as the lead vocalist of Airborne, a Pittsburgh-area band whose repertoire includes popular music from several decades. The group has performed throughout the tri-state region at concerts, festivals, private events, and civic programs. Jimerson has also worked as an entertainment producer with Entertainment Unlimited, a Pennsylvania entertainment agency that books live bands and other performers.
His recorded and screen work includes a contribution to B. E. Taylor's 2004 album One Nation Under God and the holiday recording Jeff Jimerson On the Ice. In the film Sudden Death, released in 1995 and filmed partly at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena, he was credited as the anthem singer. He has additionally performed in the B. E. Taylor Christmas Show, appeared in local charitable events, and supplied vocals for radio and television commercials.
Connections
Jimerson has maintained a long professional association with Airborne and with the Pittsburgh Penguins through his performance work. He has also collaborated with B. E. Taylor in recorded music and seasonal concert performances.
