He was a pupil of his father and of Karl Czerny.
Leschetizky toured successfully as a pianist on the Continent; he lived in Russia for most of the period from 1852 to 1878. His great fame came from his teaching, first in Russia and later (1880 - 1915) in Vienna. Among his pupils were Paderewski, Ossip Gabrilówitsch, Gabrilowitsch, and Arthur Schnabel.
He had taught until the age of 85, created one of the most eminent private piano schools in the world. He taught numerous great pianists.
Leschetizky composed over a hundred characteristic piano pieces, two operas: Die Brüder von San Marco and Die Erste Falte, thirteen songs and a one-movement piano concerto.
