In the solitude of her chamber she mourned her continual departure from Him whose love she well knew could alone satisfy her soul; and she felt that earthly affection, though baffled, blighted, and unconfessed, was keeping her from close communion with her God, instead of leading her to rest on Him "with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Letters always arrived at Hillside Cottage before breakfast time, silently awaiting on the snowy tablecloth Miss Rachel's or Millie's appearance. It happened one morning that there was a letter for each. Mary had written earnestly and simply to her young mistress, entreating her with full purpose of heart to R serve the Lord, pressing on her recollection that she should not grow fainthearted at sorrow, inasmuch as we have been forewarned, that it is "through much tribulation we are to enter the kingdom of heaven." Mary had her own heavy trials,--she was in the midst of privation, difficulty, and suffering; but she had found the pearl of great price, and would not let it go. Christ and his salvation were unspeakably precious to her soul, and in the sweet intercourse of her peculiar and unrestrained correspondence with Millie, she spoke out of the abundance of her heart of her Saviour's precious atonement, his pardoning grace, and sustaining care. All this was no theory, and self-deception must nece-ssarily have melted away before sorrows such as hers. Life, as far as concerned the present, was a desert waste, and the past was clouded by saddened memory; but on the future a ray rested from above, even a portion of that light which maketh glad the city of our God.
