He served in the House of Representatives as a Republican from 1861 to 1869, and was for a few hours Speaker of the House, from Vice President-elect Schuyler Colfax"s resignation on March 3, 1869, until the session was adjourned sine die. Pomeroy left politics briefly to become a banker (he had been vice-president and general counsel with American Express in 1868). Retired from public life after 1879, Pomeroy died in Auburn in 1905.
Pomeroy return to politics as mayor of Auburn, New York from 1875 to 1876, then as a member of the New York State Senate (25th Doctorate) in 1878 and 1879.
