(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Not illustrated. 1911 Excerpt: ... of Syria, Padan-Aram, consists of this great level plain. Here Laban lived and hither Jacob came and tended Laban's flocks. 5. During Old Testament times, Damascus was the capital city of Syria. Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is at the foot of snowy Mt. Hermon, where the sparkling mountain river Abana suddenly bursts through the open country, and scatters into small streams, creating a paradise of grassy banks and gardens. Damascus is said to have been founded by the son of Aram. It is first mentioned in Scripture in connection with Abraham's steward, who was a native of the place (Gen. 15: 2.) It was the capital of the kings of Syria, who were almost continually engaged in wars with the kings of Israel and Judah. King David subdued Damascus, but it regained its independence and fought against Israel under its kings Benhadad and Hazael. Elisha the prophet visited Benhadad, and wept because of the evil that would be wrought upon Israel by Hazael. And you remember how Naaman, captain of the army of Syria, was cured of his leprosy by obeying the command of EHsha. 6. Damascus has always been a trade centre, and caravans from Egypt passed to Palmyra and the river Euphrates. The Apostle Paul was converted outside of its walls. In it was the street called "Straight," and the house of Ananias, and here St. Paul was let down over the walls in a basket. 7. Damascus is connected at all points with the Old and the New Testament, and yet it was never a centre of God's work. There are many prominent, ancient and important cities and families who are connected with God in a loose way, but that is j the most that can be said of them. Gate ofyt "Straight 8. In later days Damascus yielded the. e.' omn£ precedence to Antioch, furthe...

(This book updates Charles Porterfield Krauth's work in Th...)
This book updates Charles Porterfield Krauth's work in The Conservative Reformation and Its Theology (1866) to the year 1911. It presents one of the most scholarly analyses for the Lutheran Confessions in that period. The book shows an awareness of an alignment with European scholarship of the day concerning the Confessions and the development of doctrine. Similar to Krauth, it demonstrates a confessional direction within the larger movement of "American Lutheranism" that could be significantly anti-confessional. The Confessional Principle and the Confessions of the Lutheran Church helps readers understand the issues that "old Missouri" has with some scholars of the time and why unity became a challenge in the twentieth century.

(Excerpt from A History of the Lutheran Church in Pennsylv...)
Excerpt from A History of the Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania, 1638-1820, Vol. 1: From the Original Sources The Lutheran Church in America owes a debt of gratitude, not yet fully realized in its English literature, to a line of early pioneer historians in Pennsylvania - Justus Falckner, Israel Acrelius, and especially Henry Melchior Muhlenberg - ; as well as to a much later group of historical scholars and original investigators, now deceased - W. J. Mann, C. W. Schaeffer, B. M. Schmucker, M. L. Stoever, John V. Morris, Charles J. Hay and Oswald Seidensticker, who took up the work after the lapse of a century, and who, except Professors Stoever and Hay, were the teachers, friends and predecessors of the present writer. The number of able historians and investigators, still living and in the field at this time, is not small, and it is hoped that due credit is given in the text or footnotes of of the present work to each of them. Pioneer Lutheranism in Pennsylvania does not desire to lay claim to precedence, perfection or supremacy among her few mature or her many stalwart younger brethren who have been making history so rapidly in this Western World.
