North-east District 1889-1890. Served in South African. Gazetted February 18, 1900, as Major-General on StafT Commanding 18th Brigade.
Commanded at Barberton with charge of the Portuguese frontier, October 1900. Commanded mobile columns in Cape Colony, October 1901 (Companion of the Bath, despatches four times, 8 clasps). MajorGeneral commanding Bloemfontein District and troops in Orange River Colony, 1902-1904.
MajorGeneral commanding Transvaal, 1904-1906. Acted G. O. Commander-in-Chief South Africa, 1904. Rank of Major-General confirmed, 1906.
Accredited Agent of Lord Selborne in Zululand to report progress of the rebellion and military operations for its suppression, 1906 (medal). Commanded 6th Division, Colchester, 1906. 2nd Division, Aldershot, 1907-1910. In command of the Straits Settlements, Singapore, since 1910.
