Enlisted private 102d New York Vols., November 9, 1861. Appointed corporal same month. Severely wounded in battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia, August 9, 1862, and in hospital on account of wounds until February 1863.

Appointed Second lieutenant 102d New York Vols., August 9, 1862. Mustered out on account of disability, March 7, 1863. Appointed Second lieutenant Veterinary Reserve Corps, August 19, 1863, Second lieutenant 42d Infantry (Veterinary Reserve Corps), July 28, 1866.

Transferred to 5th Infantry, November 15, 1869. Promoted First lieutenant, August 31, 1875. Captain, October 8, 1885.

Major 5th Infantry, February 27, 1899. Lieutenant colonel 29th Infantry, February 28, 1901. Colonel 27th Infantry, July 14, 1902.

Brigadier general, August 14, 1903, and retired from active service, August 15, 1903.
