Théodule Ribot was born on August 8, 1823, in Saint-Nicolas-d'Attez, France. He was a son of a civil engineer.
Initially, Théodule attended the École des Arts et Métiers de Châlons in his native Saint-Nicolas-d'Attez. Later, in 1845, he left for Paris, where he was an apprentice and assistant of Auguste-Barthélémy Glaize. Although, Ribot was mostly a self-taught painter with his own vision and style.
In 1845, Théodule Ribot went to Paris, where he worked, decorating gilded frames for a mirror manufacturer. In 1848, the painter traveled to Algeria, returning to Paris in 1851.
In the late 1850's, while still working at peripheral art-related crafts, Ribot started to paint seriously, at night, after a full day's work, by lamplight. It was at that time, that he befriended Henri Fantin-Latour and François Bonvin. In 1861, Théodule began to show his works at the Salon Paris.
In the late 1870's, Ribot settled down in Colombes, where he lived in poor health and almost abandoned painting. He lived in Colombes until the last day of his life.
