Studied at private schools. Pupil of Ary Scheffer. Studied in Paris, 1853, where he was intimately associated with Du Maurier, Poynter, and Whistler.
Paintings: Feeding Pigeons, 1877; A Girl holding an Embroidery Frame, 1877; The Harbour Bar at Teignmouth, 1877; The Riviera of Genoa in Spring, 1877; Three Figures on a Marble Seat, with Orange Blossoms and Marigolds, 1878; a series of panels for dining-room in Bank Hall, Chapelen-le-Frith, Derbyshire, 1872. R/:creations: painting and modelling. Exhibited in R.A. 1805-1877. In Grosvenor Gallery, 1877-1881. Resided in Algiers, 1858-1859.
Worked at Diisseldorf with Du Maurier, 1860. Has lived much abroad, principally on the Riviera. Director for Art in the Department of Science and Art, 1881-1898.
