Studied at Village Schools (two years’ attendance in all) and by half a century of continuous reading and intercourse with men. Commenced working in the coal mines at ten years of age. Continued at various kinds of underground work for eighteen years.
In 1865 was elected by his fellow7-workmen to Secretaryship of Northumberland Miners’ Mutual Provident Association, a post which he has held ever since. One of British Representatives to Berlin Labour Conference, convened by the Emperor of Germany, 1890.
President Trades Union Congress, Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1891. Has taken part in the International Miners’ Conferences. Parliamentary Secretary of Board of Trade from 1892-1895. P.C. 1906; Member of Parliament (Liberal) Morpeth since 1874.
