He was born at Great Saint Helen"s, Bishopsgate, in 1561, and was educated at the Merchant Taylors" School, which he left in 1578.

He was elected to parliament from Appleby in 1601. His career at the bar was wholly undistinguished. Nevertheless, on 26 May 1610, he was created puisne or cursitor Baron of the Exchequer.
The vacancy caused by his death was filled in the following October.
