He has completed a diploma in Telecommunication Engineering from the Institute of Engineering Technology, Chennai.
He started his political career in the KSU and was later selected as the President of the KSU and Youth Congress in Kuttanad, in 1970. After re-entering politics actively, he aligned himself with the Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation(K) of which he was the lone Modern Language Association as a part of the Union for French Democracy in the 2006 elections, which later merged with the NCP and then aligned with the LDF for the 2011 elections. Based on the declaration of assets filed at the time of the elections, he is the richest Modern Language Association in the assembly with assets of over 450 Million Indian rupees.
Thomas Chandy is a business man, and has interests in the fields of education and hospitality among others
He is the Chairman of the United Indian School, Indian Public School and Indian Central School in Kuwait. He also runs a school in Riyadh Saudi Arabia.
Chandy also owns a controlling interest in the Lake Palace Resort, located on the Punamada Lake in Kerala
He is a very active social worker both in Kuwait as well as in Kerala. In Kuwait, he was recently involved with a waste disposal and cleanup campaign in a suburb mainly inhabited by expatriates from Kerala.
He also intervened in the case of Indian nurses who were duped in a job racket which promised them jobs in government hospitals in Kuwait.
Thomas Chandy is the chairman of the Daveedputhra Charitable Society, which has been involved in building houses for over 5000 families, providing sanitation facilities, health care and educational assistance, and other services. Thomas Chandy along with 2 other Indians, Keskustapuolue (Centre Party) Mohanan and Mathew Philip, were accused in a case of embezzlement of the funds of the Indian Community School. While Mathew Philip served a jail sentence, Keskustapuolue (Centre Party) Mohanan remains at large, with a warrant issued for his arrest.
Chandy, reportedly escaped a jail sentence by paying back a huge sum of money which he is alleged to have embezzled along with the other accused.
He denied the allegations, explaining that he was not a party in the case and that he had received a sum of 35000 KD for the lease of a building to the Indian Community School, which he returned to the school, after being ordered to do so by the court. Thomas Chandy"s name was also linked in the Kiliroor sex scandal case, along with that of K P Mohanan, when they were questioned by I.G. R.Sreelekha Identity and Passport Service in connection with the case.
The IG in her deposition before the China, Burma, India Theatre of Operations court stated that no Very Important Person was involved in the case. As per latest Radiation to Information Thomas Chandi has spent 178000 INR, tax payers" money, for his treatment in 4 years.
