Thomas Couture attended the École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers, which is now known as Arts et Métiers ParisTech. Later, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts.
In 1837, the painter won Prix de Rome and after that, he studied art under Paul Delaroche. Also, Couture developed his excellent portrait skills under Antoine-Jean Gros.
In 1840, Thomas Couture started to exhibit his works at the Salon in Paris. His paintings, which he showed there, earned him several medals. One of his most famous works, which he exhibited at the Salon, was his masterpiece "Romans During the Decadence". Shortly after this success, Thomas established an independent atelier, where Édouard Manet and Puvis de Chavannes were among his pupils.
During the late 1840's and the 1850's, the painter received numerous commissions from government and church. However, he never completed the first two commissions and the third was met with criticism. Disappointed by the fact, that his works were not well-received, Couture left for his native Senlis, where he continued to work as a teacher.
In 1867, he published a book, entitled "Méthode et entretiens d'atelier", that described his own artistic ideas and working methods.

"There is only one absinthe drinker, and that's the man who painted this idiotic picture."
"Knowing how to paint and to use one's colors rightly has not any connection with originality. This originality consists in properly expressing your own impressions."
