He matriculated at Street Alban Hall, Oxford under date 20 December 1577, aged 19 and was awarded Bachelor from Merton College, Oxford on 28 January 1579 and Master of Arts on 1 December 1581. He was admitted at Inner Temple in 1581 and was awarded B and Data Control Language at Oxford on 11 July 1589. He was a judge at the high court of admiralty from 1589 to 1608.
He was elected Member of Parliament for Whitchurch in 1601.
He was knighted on 23 July 1603. In 1604 he was elected as the first Member of Parliament for Oxford University.
He was chancellor of the diocese of London from 1607 and master in chancery from 1608. Crompton died in 1609.
In 1587, Crompton was elected Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge.
