Thomas Kingston Derry obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from Oxford University.

Career

Thomas Kingston Derry was a history master at Repton School and headmaster at Mill Hill School during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II he served as an expert in Scandinavia for the BBC and the Political Intel­ligence Department of the Foreign Service. After the war, Derry taught history at Marylebone Grammar School until 1965.

Thomas Kingston and his wife moved to Oslo, where he was active in the Anglo-Norsk Society and contributed to the Aftenposten newspaper. His writings consist of a number of important history textbooks, such as The Making of Modern Britain that was written in 1956 and The European World in 1950.

During his years in Norway, Derry published histories about the area, including A History of Modern Norway, 1814-1972 in 1973 and A History of the Anglo-Norse Society, Oslo, 1921-1981 in 1981.

Achievements

• Thomas Kingston Derry is particularly known as the author of books on history. He was honored with an appointment to the Order of the British Empire in 1976 and was also knighted by the King of Norway.
