He then served in the Royal Navy, 1903-1922. He then became a chartered accountant and practised, 1925-1970. He served as Under-Secretary of State for Scotland in Winston Churchill"s caretaker government from May to July 1945.
He was made a peer on 4 May 1955, shortly before the 1955 general election, and served as a Minister of State at the Scottish Office until 1958.
