He was the second son of Anthony Godwyn of Wookey, Somerset.

He graduated Bachelor on 24 January 1607 and proceeded Master of Arts on 11 October 1609.
He entered Magdalen College, Oxford, at the age of fifteen and between 1604 and 1610 was a demy of the college. Godwyn became the first fellow of the newly founded Pembroke College, Oxford (1624), became chaplain to the Bishop of Bath and Wells and rector of Brightwell, Berkshire (1626-1643).
