(A rediscovered classic of madness and possession by the a...)
A rediscovered classic of madness and possession by the author of the famous bodyswap novel Vice Versa After her father loses his fortune, Stella Maberly is forced to go into service as a paid companion to her former schoolfellow, Evelyn Heseltine. When Stella finds Evelyn one morning apparently dead from an accidental--or perhaps intentional--poisoning, she is shocked and horrified. But it is nothing compared to her horror when Evelyn reawakens. Stella believes her friend's body is animated by something evil. Is Stella insane, or has a spirit of darkness actually taken possession of Evelyn? When originally published in 1896, The Statement of Stella Maberly was subtitled 'Written by Herself' and presented as the real-life confession of a possibly mad woman, but the identity of the book's true author, F. Anstey (1856-1934), famous for his oft-filmed bodyswap novel Vice Versa (1882), was soon revealed. This first-ever scholarly edition of Anstey's lost classic features a new introduction and notes by Peter Merchant, plus the first-ever appearance of unpublished manuscripts pertaining to the novel, including a 1916 screenplay for a never-produced film version, An Evil Spirit. 'A very curious and interesting story ... either a study of hallucination, of madness ... or else it is a sober statement of how, on a young girl's death, her body was revivified by a wandering spirit ... The book has very great interest ... written very skilfully and convincingly' -- The Review of Reviews 'A unique and weird experience' -- The Literary World 'Has a kinship with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ... a most striking tale '-- Godey's Magazine

("This day six weeks-just six weeks ago!" Horace Ventimore...)
"This day six weeks-just six weeks ago!" Horace Ventimore said, half aloud, to himself, and pulled out his watch. "Half-past twelve-what was I doing at half-past twelve?" As he sat at the window of his office in Great Cloister Street, Westminster, he made his thoughts travel back to a certain glorious morning in August which now seemed so remote and irrecoverable. At this precise time he was waiting on the balcony of the Hôtel de la Plage-the sole hostelry of St. Luc-en-Port, the tiny Normandy watering-place upon which, by some happy inspiration, he had lighted during a solitary cycling tour-waiting until She should appear. He could see the whole scene: the tiny cove, with the violet shadow of the cliff sleeping on the green water; the swell of the waves lazily lapping against the diving-board from which he had plunged half an hour before; he remembered the long swim out to the buoy; the exhilarated anticipation with which he had dressed and climbed the steep path to the hotel terrace.

He was born in Kensington, London, to Augusta Amherst Austen, an organist and composer, and Thomas Anstey Guthrie.
He was educated at King"s College School and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and was called to the bar in 1880.
He published in 1883 a serious novel, The Giant"s Robe. But he discovered (and again in 1889 with The Pariah) that it was not as a serious novelist but as a humorist that the public insisted on regarding him. As such, his reputation was further confirmed by The Black Poodle (1884),,, and other works.
Baboo Jabberjee Bachelor of Arts, and A Bayard from Bengal (1902) are humorous yet truthful studies of the East Indian with a veneer of English civilization.
In 1901, his successful farce The Manitoba from Blankleys, based on a story that originally appeared in Punch, was first produced at the Prince of Wales Theatre, in London. He wrote Only Toys and
Many of Anstey"s stories have been adapted into theatrical productions and motion pictures. The Tinted Venus was adapted by South. J. Perelman, Ogden Nash, and Kurt Weill into One Touch of Venus in 1943.
Vice Versa has been filmed many times, usually transposed in setting and without any cr to the original book
Another of his novels, The Brass Bottle, has also been filmed more than once, including The Brass Bottle (1964). His is one of the earliest stories featuring the science fiction concept of intentional and frequent movement in time, and probably the first to investigate the practical paradoxes such a concept would create.
Anstey Guthrie was recognized as a writer of the comic novels. His principal works were "Vice Versa" and "The Giant's Robe".
