Johnson married Agnes Wilson and together they had five children. In 1879, he was elected as an alderman of the Warwick Town Council, serving for nineteen years which included being mayor from 1881-1884. He was also President of the Warwick Progress Association and Vice-president of the East Downs Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
In May 1904, he was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council, and remained a member till his death ten years later.
Johnson died in Warwick in October, 1914. His store in Warwick (Johnson"s Building) is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
