Background
Monk was the son of Anthony Monk of Potheridge, Devon and was baptised at Ashwater Devon on 9 April 1570.

Career
He was the father of George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670), Knight of the Order of the Garter. He matriculated at King"s College, Cambridge at Easter 1587 and was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1590. He was knighted. Monk died at the age of about 57.
