(The author of the National Bestsellers Care of the Soul, ...)
The author of the National Bestsellers Care of the Soul, Soul Mates, and The Soul of Sex turns to the shadow side of loving and therapy: its cruelties, perversions, and appalling tortures. In Dark Eros, Thomas Moore shines a new light on the dark fictions of the Marquis de Sade to learn what they teach about the horrors hidden in the human heart, revealing the poetic and imaginitive powers that lie within violence and sexual victimization. By returning to the paradox of ancient medicine—the cause of a disease is its very cure—Thomas Moore opens the way through sadism that affects family, education, love affairs, the work place and politics.

(A job is never just a job. It is always connected to a de...)
A job is never just a job. It is always connected to a deep and invisible process of finding meaning in life through work. In Thomas Moore’s groundbreaking book Care of the Soul, he wrote of “the great malady of the twentieth century…the loss of soul.” That bestselling work taught readers ways to cultivate depth, genuineness, and soulfulness in their everyday lives, and became a beloved classic. Now, in A Life’s Work, Moore turns to an aspect of our lives that looms large in our self-regard, an aspect by which we may even define ourselves—our work. The workplace, Moore knows, is a laboratory where matters of soul are worked out. A Life’s Work is about finding the right job, yes, and it is also about uncovering and becoming the person you were meant to be. Moore reveals the quest to find a life’s work in all its depth and mystery. All jobs, large and small, long-term and temporary, he writes, contribute to your life’s work. A particular job may be important because of the emotional rewards it offers or for the money. But beneath the surface, your labors are shaping your destiny for better or worse. If you ignore the deeper issues, you may not know the nature of your calling, and if you don’t do work that connects with your deep soul, you may always be dissatisfied, not only in your choice of work but in all other areas of life. Moore explores the often difficult process—the obstacles, blocks, and hardships of our own making—that we go through on our way to discovering our purpose, and reveals the joy that is our reward. He teaches us patience, models the necessary powers of reflection, and gives us the courage to keep going. A Life’s Work is a beautiful rumination, realistic and poignant, and a comforting and exhilarating guide to one of life’s biggest dilemmas and one of its greatest opportunities.

In his latest book, Writing in the Sand, Thomas Moore finds striking new meaning in the rich stories and imagery of the Gospels, recasting Jesus not as a teacher of morals and beliefs but as a spiritual visionary with a radical vision for humanity. This highly original take on the Gospels offers a fresh, new way of imagining human life and society. It presents Jesus not as the founder of a religion but as a world reformer offering a spiritual path to everyone, from every background. It offers a personal spirituality fit for the twenty-first century, where the individual bears responsibility for meaning and for a creative, convivial way of life. In his examination of the original Greek texts, Moore dismisses the cautionary voice of tradition and explores the deeper significance of language, stressing the origins of words and the many levels of meaning in stories and imagery. Through his study, Moore shows that the teachings of Jesus are challenging in a far different way than the moralism often associated with them. Based on being open to life, deepening your understanding, and giving up all defensiveness around your convictions, the Gospels can be the source of a new kind of certainty and stability that cannot be codified and enshrined in a list of rules. Writing in the Sand presents the essence of Jesus’ teachings and offers a way of understanding them intelligently and devotedly in the twenty-first century.

(THE PLANETS WITHIN asks us to return to antiquity with ne...)
THE PLANETS WITHIN asks us to return to antiquity with new eyes. It centers on one of the most psychological movements of the prescientific age-Renaissance Italy, where a group of "inner Columbuses" charted territories that still give us today a much- needed sense of who we are and where we have come from, and the right routes to take toward fertile and unexplored places. Chief among these masters of the interior life was Marsilio Ficino, presiding genius of the Florentine Academy, who taught that all things exist in soul and must be lived in its light. This study of Ficino broadens and deepens our understanding of psyche, for Ficino was a doctor of soul, and his insights teach us the care and nurture of soul. Moore takes as his guide Ficino's own fundamental tool-imagination. Respecting the integrity and autonomy of images, The Planets Within unfolds a poetics of soul in a kind of dialogue between the laconic remarks of Ficino and the need to give these remarks a life and context for our day.

("Care of the Soul" and "Soul Mates," the first two books ...)
"Care of the Soul" and "Soul Mates," the first two books by Thomas Moore, were both huge national bestsellers, appearing on the "New York Times" hardcover bestseller list for more than eight months each and selling more than two million copies. In this important sequel, Thomas Moore takes readers to a new level and teaches them how to relate to the world and nature in a more meaningful way. Introducing the idea that soul is an essential ingredient of life, "Care of the Soul" together with "Soul Mates" changed the way millions of readers thought about psychology and spirituality. Now, with "The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life," Moore takes another radical step, applying care of the soul to our surroundings and the concrete particulars of how we live. Starting from the premise that we can no longer afford to live in a disenchanted world, Moore shows that a profound, enchanted engagement with life is not a childish thing to be put away with adulthood, but a necessity for our personal and collective survival. With his lens focused on such specific aspects of daily life as clothing, food, furniture, architecture, ecology, language and politics, Moore describes the renaissance these can undergo when there is a genuine engagement with beauty, craft, nature and art in both private and public life. When all is said and done, what makes life worth living? Not electronics, entertainments or rapid information retrieval, but a spiritual and soulful vision that arises from enchanted nature, a fantasy-filled childhood, intimate neighborhoods and homes and a public life dedicated to the needs of the heart. "The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life" opens up the care of the soul and thesearch for intimate life to the ordinary world in which we live every day.
