He was graduated in Architecture at Columbia University, and completed his studies at the Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts.
He began work in New York as draftsman for the firm of Carrere & Hastings. During 1907 he secured a position with the U. S. Commission in Cuba to serve on the island as Consulting Architect and Engineer in charge of the planning and supervision of buildings erected by our Government.
Upon his return to New York Mr. Newton served as Assistant to the State Architect in preparing plans for the new State Building at Albany. However, with the start of World War I he resigned to join the U. S. Army, and served in France with the A. E. F. during the hostilities. After being promoted to the rank of Major, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his part in the help given France.
Following the Armistice in 1918 Mr. Newton resumed his position with the New York State Architect, later entered the office of Architect Donn Barber, with whom he was associated until his death.
