He graduated from high school in Princeton, New Jersey and then graduated from Princeton University in 1936.
He died of a heart attack at his home in Washington, District of Columbia
He served as Deputy Chief of the Soviet Division of the Clandestine Services Unit of the Central Intelligence Agency, then as a base chief in Germany and then as assistant to Director Allen Dulles. In 1962 he was assigned to the White House during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired from the Central Intelligence Agency in 1973.
