Studied at Scotch College, Melbourne. Private tuition; Military College.
Entered army, 1861; joined 102nd Fusiliers and then 103rd Fusiliers, now 1st and 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Entered the Indian Staff Corps. Was eight years in judicial employ, receiving the thanks of the Government for his “untiring energy and resource” on occasion of the disastrous cyclone of 2 May 1872.
Retired in 1883.
Raised the Mounted Rifles, Rangers, and Rifle Clubs in Victoria in 1885-1886, as well as raised Mounted Rifles in other states. Commanded Victorians throughout the Boer War of the 1900 phase. Received two contusions from shell fire, and was the only Australian officer of the permanent forces to see the first phase of the Boer War through.
Decorated for good service in the campaign (Companion of the Bath, medal and 5 clasps). Commander of Queensland Defence Forces 4.
