He began teaching at the young age of sixteen and did so until he became twenty-one years old. He then became Deputy County Treasurer of Clark County in 1878, and moved to Jeffersonville. Four years later he worked as a clerk in the auditor"s office for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
In 1888 he resigned from the railroad to go into real-estate and insurance business for himself in Jeffersonville.
In 1898 Thomas Rader defeated Republican incumbent Isaac F. Whitside for mayor of Jeffersonville. Rader served as mayor for one term, and was defeated by Abraham Schwaninger in 1902.
Later that year he was appointed to as the County Treasurer by the Board of Commissioners following the resignation of the incumbent treasurer. Thomas Rader died of Bright"s disease in 1904.
