In July 1872, Elizabeth married John Charles Rudman and Thomas George adopted the surname of his step-father, which he subsequently used throughout his life. Rudman was educated at Eton College as an Oppidan Scholar and became House Captain of Godolphin House. After leaving Eton, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read History.
After graduating from Cambridge in 1890, Rudman joined his step-father at Jardine Matheson & Company initially at their offices in London, before moving to Hong Kong in 1892, where he had a very successful career in trading, banking and railways investments.
The wealth generated from this period was used to expand the family"s farming estate near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
