Swan received Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ursinus College. He also graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now the Carnegie-Mellon University) with Master of Fine Arts degree.
Early in his career, Swan was a marketer of television production for advertising agencies and corporations.
Concerning his writings, Swan is the author of novels The Davinci Deception, The Cezanne Chase and The Final Faberge. He is also a contributor to magazines.
