(Excerpt from A Progressive Course Designed to Assist the ...)
Excerpt from A Progressive Course Designed to Assist the Student of Colloquial Chinese as Spoken in the Capital and the Metropolitan Department, Vol. 1 of 2 In producing the present reprint of Sir Thomas Wade's great work in an abridged form, the Publishers have acted upon advice which was approved by Sir Walter Hillier - the joint Author of the 2nd edition published in 1886 - and also with the sanction of Sir Thomas Wade's executors. Since 1886 so many new text-books on Colloquial Chinese have appeared, that much of the Tzn Erh Chi has been superseded in the curriculum of studies prescribed for Student Interpreters in the British Legation.' The Hundred Lessons and Graduate's Wooing have been abandoned for many years in favour of other works, and as the ti Erh Chi was primarily intended for the use of Consular Students it was decided - for the time being at least - to reprint only those Parts which have continued to hold their own as a textbook. The present reprint contains therefore only Parts I. To IV., that is to say, the introductory Parts on Pronunciation and the Radicals, followed by the Forty Exercises and Ten Dialogues. In the opinion of competent authorities the student of Colloquial Pekingese has in these four Parts an introduction to the language which will not fail to appear to him more and more valuable as he progresses. The collection of characters to which he is introduced has been so carefully made, that a sound knowledge of them will furnish a solid foundation upon which further studies of the language can securely rest. So much has been said and written for and against Sir Thomas Wade's system of transliteration that we will here add no more to this perennial argument than a request to the tyro: and that is, to remember that it is the only system of romanisation which has so far attained any widespread and lasting success. (Excerpt from Yü Yen Tzu Êrh Chi, Vol. 1 of 3: A Progressi...)
Excerpt from Yü Yen Tzu Êrh Chi, Vol. 1 of 3: A Progressive Course Designed to Assist the Student of Colloquial Chinese as Spoken in the Capital and the Metropolitan Department I was also indebted to Mr. Donald spence for his assistance on the voyage home in the completion of these short sentences, of which I had prepared little more than a fourth part; but his contribution, from the circumstances of time and place, was necessarily less significant than Mr. Hillier's. Mr. Hillier, who is a high authority upon the tones of the Peking dialect, has also carefully corrected the tone marks of every word in the first seven Parts of the new edition. Part IV - the Ten Dialogues - remains as it was, except that Mr. Hillier, as my plenipotentiary, has seen good to suppress the tenth dialogue, a conversation about the construction of the language. He has substituted for it a dialogue of his own composition. This, as it purports to take place between two friends at a restaurant, is no doubt a more palatable subject than that of the dialogue suppressed, against which more than one earnest beginner has been heard to protest as over trying to digestion. He was born in London on the 25th of August 1818, was the son of Major Wade of the Black Watch, by his wife Anne, daughter of William Smythe of Barbavilla, Westmeath.
He was educated at the Cape, in Mauritius, at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1838, his father purchased for him a commission in the 81st Foot. He also devoted his leisure to the congenial study of Italian and modern Greek.
In 1838 his father purchased for him a commission in the 816t Regiment. Exchanging (1839) into the 42nd Highlanders, he served with his regiment in the Ionian Islands.
On receiving his commission as lieutenant in 1841 he exchanged into the 98th Regiment, then under orders for China, and landed in Hong-Kong in June 1842. The scene of the war had at that time been transferred to the Yangtze-kiang, and thither Wade was ordered with his regiment.
There he took part in the attack on Chin-kiang-fu and in the advance on Nanking.
In 1845 he was appointed interpreter in Cantonese to the Supreme Court of Hong-Kong, and in 1846 assistant Chinese secretary to the superintendent of trade, Sir John Davis.
In 1852 he was appointed vice-consul at Shanghai. The Tai-ping rebellion had so disorganized the administration in the neighbourhood of Shanghai that it was considered advisable to put the collection of the foreign customs duties into commission, a committee of three, of whom WTade was the chief, being entrusted with the administration of the customs. This formed the beginning of the imperial maritime customs service.
In 1855 Wade was appointed Chinese secretary to Sir John Bowring, who had succeeded Sir J. Davis at Hong- Kong. On the declaration of the second Chinese War in 1857, he was attached to Lord Elgin's staff as Chinese secretary, and with the assistance of H. N. Ley he conducted the negotiations which led up to the treaty of Tientsin (1858).
In the following year he accompanied Sir Frederick Bruce in his attempt to exchange the ratification of the treaty, and was present at Taku when the force attending the mission was treacherously attacked and driven back from the Peiho.
On Lord Elgin's return to China in 1860 he resumed his former post of Chinese secretary, and was mainly instrumental in arranging- for the advance of the special envoys and the British and French forces to Tientsin, and subsequently towards Peking.
